Tobacco has many chemicals and carcinogens plus a poisonous gas called Carbon Monoxide abbreviated to CO which is inhaled into the lungs. A CO breath test is when a patient is asked to blow into a handheld CO breath monitor which can detect the level of carbon monoxide showing how much they are smoking tobacco.
What does CO breath monitor show ?
The LCD screen will display 3 different CO amounts. CO PPM carbon monoxide level by parts per million, %COHB percentage of carbon monoxide, (and %FCOHB if you are carrying a baby, this is the babies reading of carbon monoxide). This information can then be cross checked against the guide chart. If for example the monitor gives a reading above 3.0 %COHB this would indicate the patient is a heavy smoker.
